Live Nation CEO’s Encore Performance Doubles His Paycheck
Last year was a white hot one for Live Nation Entertainment CEO Michael Rapino.
The concert promoter for such acts as Elton John, Lil Wayne, and Harry Styles raked in a fat $32.6 million in total compensation for the year, according to the company’s April 24 proxy. Yowzer!
Live Nation investors? Not so much. The company’s shares returned 10.04% in 2025, little more than half the return of the S&P 500. This year has been slightly better: up 20% year-to-date.
Which is why this 8-K filed after the markets closed on Friday caught our attention. In the filing, the company’s compensation committee decided to enter into a new agreement with Rapino, even though his current agreement didn’t expire until the end of 2027.
Rapino’s new contract extends through the end of 2031 and includes several significant sweeteners for the executive. Under the new deal, Live Nation will continue to pay Rapino a base salary of $3 million, a targeted performance-based cash bonus of $17 million, and restricted shares worth $10 million.
But that apparently wasn’t enough. So they added an additional $15 million annually in restricted stock starting in 2027 plus more targeted performance share units, or PSUs, worth another $15 million each year. That last figure can be doubled if Live Nation shareholder returns meet certain thresholds.
So Rapino’s compensation is roughly doubling
Still not enough, you say? There’s more.
When the new employment agreement kicks in, Rapino gets a further $20 million in restricted stock.
So, in a nutshell, Rapino’s compensation has more than doubled in the new contract.
At the last annual meeting on June 11, Live Nation shareholders overwhelmingly approved the company’s executive compensation. It will be interesting to see if the new contract yields similar results at the company’s next annual meeting.
