On Peabody’s generous consulting gig

In these United States, lucrative c-suite farewell packages are something of a tradition.

But what about in Australia? To be honest, we’re not really sure. Which brings us to Darren Yeates, Peabody Energy’s outgoing chief operating officer, as Aussie as Crocodile Dundee, with stints at a string of Australian blue chips and other miners.

Yeates is scheduled to step down from his post at St. Louis-based Peabody next year, according to this recent 8-K. And he will get a happy lesson in generous American good-bye packages.

Yeates’ departure is scheduled for January 31, 2027. The next day he’ll start a consulting gig for Peabody that pays a minimum of $89,773 monthly.

Let’s do some math. Multiplying that monthly minimum by 12 months adds up to $1,077,27, which represents a 25% raise over what the executive made in 2025, according to Peabody’s 2026 proxy.

But, wait, there’s more. As the 8-K helpfully explains, “If the Company requires Mr. Yeates to provide services in excess of 40 hours during any month, he will be entitled to an additional hourly fee of $2,244 for each additional hour worked.”

So not only is the consulting fee higher on an hourly basis, it also requires him to work a lot less, since presumably he currently works more than 40 hours a week.

To be clear, there is nothing apparently nefarious in Yeates’ departure, and his history at Peabody, one of America’s largest coal miners, seems above board. He is approaching typical U.S. retirement age, and Peabody has longstanding mine holdings in Australia.

But the timing in this case is telling.

Last month, Peabody withdrew its long-standing $3.78 billion bid for Anglo American coal mines in Australia’s Bowen Basin, after the two were unable to agree on a price reduction following a mine fire.

According to an 8-K back in December 2024, a month after the deal was announced, Yeates was to continue his responsibilities over global operations at Peabody until the Anglo American deal closed or October 31, 2025, whichever came first, after which the company had the option to overhaul or change his wide-ranging responsibilities.

Yeates was named to his Peabody position in October 2020, after his decades of experience in Australia’s coal industry, including stints at mining giants Rio Tinto Ltd and BHP.

Among other credentials, according to media reports, he holds a bachelor of engineering from the University of Queensland, a graduate diploma from the University of Central Queensland, as well as an executive MBA from the Australia’s Monash Mt. Eliza Business School. That’s as Australian as an oil can of Foster’s lager!

As an Australian employee, salary and bonus are paid in Australian dollars. Yeates’ salary and short-term incentives are converted from the Australian dollar at a rate of 0.6693 US dollars to one Australian dollar, the December 31, 2025 rate provided by the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Regardless, Yeates will be waltzing Matilda his way into retirement.
