I tried Google ads once before, but wasn't happy with either the look or lack of editorial control. For example, one time I posted an item about a payday loan company and suddenly wound up with ads for payday loan companies on the site, which is not something I choose to promote/endorse on my site.

This way, it's totally up to you if you choose to support the site. I certainly hope people do, since this does take me several hours a day to find stuff. But as a former economics student, I'm also well aware that there's plenty of people who are more than happy to take a "free ride".

I much prefer your "make a donation" approach to a list of google ads. Was this a conscious decision on your part, ie, free and independent press, etc?

A very generous donor stepped forward this morning with a $50 donation, which helped me cover the rest of my train ticket and left me with enough to pay for lunch at Union Station. I'll leave the donation box up. If you make money off of something you read on the site (or avoid losing some), I hope you'll consider donating to footnoted.org and supporting independent journalism.

Though I'm not a public company and am not required to provide this, I don't have a problem doing so: $166.63. My train ticket cost $204, so the donations went a long way to helping me cover my costs and probably would have covered the whole thing were it not for PayPal's hefty bite. Many thanks to those who donated. Hope people found my little experiment interesting.

I was wondering... in the spirit of full disclosure and spelling out compensation... would you be willing to keep a running total of how much was donated to you via this site? Thanks.
